<title>Demystifying the Privacy Myth: Navigating around Gate Keepers in Male Reproductive Health Clinic</title>
<link>http://elibrary.pu.ac.ke/handle/123456789/1135</link>
<description>Demystifying the Privacy Myth: Navigating around Gate Keepers in Male Reproductive Health Clinic
Ouma, Melvin Atieno; Chai, Jonathan Furaha; Kitetu, Catherine Wawasi
Successful doctor-patient interaction in a medical setting heavily relies on&#13;
negotiating communication practices in terms of language use. To the outsider, the&#13;
medical setting is shrouded in the mystery of what happens inside and how near&#13;
impossible it is for a non-medical practitioner to get access to a health facility for&#13;
research purposes abound. Emanating from a recent successfully concluded&#13;
linguistic study, aiming to determine the features of the language and strategies&#13;
employed by doctors and patients in a male reproductive health clinic, this paper&#13;
explores the procedures of gaining access from an outsider’s perspective. Thus&#13;
responding to the existing myths about privacy and confidentiality of the medical&#13;
profession vis a vis social science researchers. The paper provides an overview of&#13;
how the researcher navigated around the gatekeepers and how patients’ consent,&#13;
privacy, and confidentiality were taken care of during the study. Critiques and&#13;
questions of methodology that arose in the academic genre are adequately addressed&#13;
in this paper. The paper answers questions such as if reproductive health is sensitive&#13;
and data in the medical setting problematic, how will the data for this particular&#13;
study be collected? Will participant observation be convenient? Will patients allow&#13;
the researcher to record the doctor-patient interaction despite the anonymity and&#13;
privacy of the data?

<title>Kigiryama Phonology</title>
<link>http://elibrary.pu.ac.ke/handle/123456789/1120</link>
<description>Kigiryama Phonology
Munyaya, Elizabeth Jumwa
Abstract: This paper provides an in-depth introduction to the&#13;
Phonology of Kigiryama language. Phonetics is the study of how&#13;
the sounds of the world’s languages are produced and perceived.&#13;
Phonology is the study of how these sounds are categorized,&#13;
contrasted, and organized into larger structures in each&#13;
language. In this paper, we will begin with a description of the&#13;
phonotactics of Kigiryama language and Kigiryama syllable&#13;
structure. Finally, this paper will analyze the phonological&#13;
processes involved with both vowels and consonants in the&#13;
language in question. The aim of the study is to give a&#13;
phonological description of Kigiryama vowels and consonants&#13;
with a special reference to the phonological processes that occur&#13;
in these phonemes. Data will be collected through interview&#13;
schedules and focus group discussions. Analysis of the data will&#13;
involve first translating the data into English, then classifying&#13;
and describing the words into the phonological processes of the&#13;
vowels and consonants. The findings will show that the processes&#13;
of glide formation, vowel deletion, vowel insertion and vowel&#13;
height assimilation occur mainly with vowels while the processes&#13;
of palatalization, labialization and assibilation occur mainly with&#13;
consonants. Throughout the paper, we will work with real data&#13;
from a diverse sample of the Kigiryama language. This&#13;
information is fundamental to any linguistic study since it forms&#13;
a foundation upon which various levels of linguistic analysis of&#13;
Kigiyama is based.&#13;
Key Words: Phonotactics, Syllabicity, Labialization,&#13;
Palatalization, Vowel Height Assimilation, Vowel Deletion And&#13;
Insertion, Assibilation And Glide Formation.
