dc.description | The study set out to investigate the factors influencing job satisfaction levels of teachers in public secondary schools in Kilifi County, Kenya. The objectives of the study were as follows; to investigate the influence of promotion on Job satisfaction levels of teachers in public secondary schools in Kilifi County; to examine the extent to which working situational factors have an influence on teachers’ job satisfaction levels; to determine the influence of management and supervision by the administration on the levels of job satisfaction of teachers and to determine the influence of Training and Development on job satisfaction levels of teachers. The study was guided by Fredrick Herzberg’s two factor theory of Motivation. Descriptive Survey Design was used to address the statement of the problem and research questions. Information was generated through questionnaires distributed to the teachers within Kilifi County. Using Stratified Sampling technique, 38 schools were selected from 107 public secondary schools in Kilifi County. A semi- structured 5-Likert rating scale questionnaire schedule was issued to 418 teachers systematically sampled. A total of 379 questionnaires were completed and returned hence Questionnaire return rate was 90.6%. After carrying out a pilot study in the randomly selected schools, data collection instrument had a reliability co-efficient of 0.75 which was calculated using Pearson’s Product Moment correlation Co- efficient method. Analysis of data was done using Descriptive Statistics which included means, frequencies and percentages provided by Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). Regression Analysis and ANOVA was calculated to establish the levels of satisfaction of teachers in the respective job factors. Data was presented in form of tables and pie charts. The results of the study showed that teachers were satisfied in the factor of Training and Development (m = 3.2). Promotion (m = 2.3) recorded the lowest mean among the respondents. Teachers were slightly satisfied with the work situational factors (m = 2.5). The teachers were slightly satisfied in the job factor of Management and supervision (m = 2.6). Overall job satisfaction indicated that 60.95% of the teachers were slightly satisfied with their jobs (m = 2.3). Regression analysis and ANOVA showed that there is a perfect strong positive relationship between the independent variables and dependent variable. The study recommended that the government should strive to disburse funds to schools to construct more classrooms and facilities to accommodate Competence Based Curriculum class expected to join junior secondary school in 2023 as well as the on-going 8-4-4 classes. Head teachers to undergo further training in the field of education administration to enhance their knowledge and supervisory skills. In comparison to other professions with similar qualifications, teachers’ pay should be equal. The TSC and the MOE should organize seminars and workshops for teachers to gain knowledge and skills pertaining their teaching job. Promotion scheme should be fair and progressive to enhance teacher retention. Job satisfaction of teachers is therefore o | en_US |
